More Pictures from Luxor

At the end of the day, we could hear the Muslim call to prayer. The tower you see is where the call comes from. In older days, an Imam stood at the top of the tower to call people to come to the mosque for prayer. (They pray 5 times a day.) Now they use loudspeakers. Since there are many mosques in big cities, you can hear several calls to prayer from different minarets (towers) at one time.

In some of the old Egyptian temples, after they were abandoned, other religious groups would come in and use them. Christians especially liked the old temples because they were often out of the way and forgotten by the rest of the world and they could hide from persecution there. This is a painting done by Christians in one rooms in a temple. Over time these huge temples were often covered by sand and no one knew where they were until discovered by archeologists.
